Automate a Restaurant Discover Recipes Through Experimentation

Combine crops and rare finds to unlock dishes worth automating with drones.

Discover Recipes

Recipe discovery is the research layer of Automate a Restaurant. The game ships with a partial cookbook at best; most profitable plates appear only after you combine crops, processed goods, and eventually Rare Ingredients in the experiment interface. This guide explains how discovery works, how to experiment efficiently, and how to promote a new dish from lab bench to drone-powered production.

New players should complete Getting Started before spending bulk ingredients on tests. Pair this page with the Recipe Checklist tool and the Best Recipes tier list once you confirm a few staples.

How discovery fits the core loop

Automate a Restaurant rewards players who close the loop farm → hunt → discover → serve → automate. Discovery sits between farming and service: you convert raw inputs into named recipes customers recognize. Until a recipe is unlocked, you cannot batch it reliably, assign it to cook drones, or judge its profit on the tier list.

Discovery is not optional for mid-game income. Basic tutorial dishes saturate quickly; margins improve when you combine multiple crop types or add rare drops. Skipping experimentation leaves you serving low-tier food while competitors automate higher tiers.

The experiment interface

Open the recipe or crafting panel from your base UI—exact icon placement can change with updates noted on Updates. You typically select a base ingredient, add secondary components, and confirm an experiment action that consumes the items.

Outcomes fall into three buckets:

  • Success: a new recipe entry appears in your cookbook permanently.
  • Known duplicate: the game tells you the combination already exists—no waste beyond ingredients if the UI refunds failures.
  • Failure: ingredients consumed with no unlock; some patches grant partial hints after repeated tries.

Always read confirmation dialogs. Late-game experiments can burn Rare Ingredients that take minutes or co-op runs to collect.

Efficient experimentation workflow

Stage one: tutorial crops only

Use the crops the Getting Started guide and in-game quests already supply. Limit tests to two- and three-item combinations before you understand stacking rules. Track attempts in the Recipe Checklist tool so you never repeat a failed pair.

Goal for stage one: three reliable dishes that match early customer tickets. Profit matters less than consistency while you save for Unlock Drones.

Stage two: pair crops with processed goods

Many discoveries require an intermediate step—milled grain, chopped vegetables, or plated bases. Process items at manual stations first, then experiment with processed outputs plus fresh crops. Automate processing only after the recipe is proven; drones should not guess for you.

If a combination fails twice with logically similar items, switch crops. Incremental sims often gate families of recipes behind progression flags you unlock by serving volume or expanding plots.

Stage three: rare and regional inputs

Mid-game recipes expect ingredients from hunts outside your starter field. Gather those materials using routes from Rare Ingredients, then experiment in small batches—one rare unit per test unless the UI guarantees refunds.

Share confirmed rare recipes with co-op partners so nobody duplicates expensive failures. Co-op etiquette lives in Co-op Shared Restaurant.

From unlock to production

Discovering a recipe is half the job. Follow this promotion checklist:

  1. Serve manually twice to verify customer demand and payout.
  2. Compare margin on the Best Recipes tier list against your current staples.
  3. Secure ingredient supply—expand plots or assign harvest drones per Unlock Drones.
  4. Bind cook and serve drones only after storage sits between field and stove.
  5. Adjust layout if drones path poorly; see Production Line Layout.

Dropping a new dish straight onto five cook drones before testing demand floods storage with unsold food.

Prioritizing which recipes to chase

Not every undiscovered plate deserves your next hour. Prioritize discoveries that:

  • Use crops you already grow at scale.
  • Appear on rotating customer requests or event boards.
  • Combine with drones you own instead of requiring new station types.
  • Avoid single-use rares until your hunt loop is stable.

Deprioritize novelty combinations that need ingredients from biomes you have not unlocked. Return after progression milestones or co-op carries.

Hints, community knowledge, and wiki tools

The game may offer vague hints after milestones—collect them, but treat spoilers carefully if you enjoy puzzle-style progression. This wiki focuses on methods, not exhaustive combination tables that go stale every patch.

Use:

Avoid third-party Scripts that claim auto-discovery; they risk account safety and teach little about ingredient flow.

Common discovery mistakes

  • Bulk experimenting without tracking, repeating failed pairs ten times.
  • Automating before manual verification, locking drones into bad recipes.
  • Burning rares on guesses instead of hunting extras first.
  • Ignoring customer mix, discovering dishes nobody orders during your play hours.
  • Splitting co-op labs where two players consume the same rare for conflicting tests.

When income stalls after a discovery spree, audit storage: you may have unlocked plates without upgrading harvest or cook capacity.

Discovery during co-op

Shared restaurants benefit from a designated experimenter who holds rare ingredients in a communal crate and announces successes in chat before others spend duplicates. Rotate the role so one player does not hoard the cookbook progress.

If permissions allow, screenshot or log new recipes for friends who play different time zones. Drones assigned overnight should cook only approved tier-list entries the group votes on.

After you fill the cookbook

Late game shifts from discovery volume to line optimization—faster drones, tighter layout, and periodic hunts for seasonal rares. Revisit Production Line Layout and Drone Priority tier list when adding premium recipes.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Do failed experiments waste ingredients?

Usually yes. Some patches refund a portion or grant hints after repeated failures, but you should assume each attempt consumes the items you selected until the UI states otherwise.

Can I automate recipe discovery?

No. Drones cook recipes you already unlocked. Experiment manually or with small controlled batches, then automate proven dishes.

When should I start using rare ingredients in experiments?

After you can farm or hunt extras reliably. If losing one unit would delay your whole session, gather backup rares first using the Rare Ingredients guide.

How do I know if a new recipe is worth scaling?

Serve it manually, compare profit and ingredient cost against your current staples, then check the Best Recipes tier list before assigning drones.

Does co-op share discovered recipes?

Shared restaurants typically share progress for the group, but communication still matters so partners do not repeat expensive experiments or automate unapproved dishes.
